How to Care for Your Activewear So It Lasts

Woman wearing KOVA Sculpt Sports Bra in Stone

Performance fabric is made to stretch and sculpt. Look after it well and it will keep its compression, colour and recovery for much longer. Most of it comes down to three things: cold water, no softener and no dryer.

Washing

  • Turn it inside out. This protects the outer surface from rubbing and pilling.
  • Cold, gentle cycle. Hot water breaks down stretch fibres over time.
  • Wash with similar colours, so your Stone and White stay clean and bright.
  • Mild detergent only.
  • Skip the fabric softener. It coats the fibres, which stops the fabric wicking sweat properly and can affect stretch.
  • No bleach, and don't soak.

Drying

  • Never tumble dry. Heat is the fastest way to wear out stretch fabric and make leggings lose their hold or go sheer.
  • Lay flat or hang to dry in the shade. Direct sun can fade colours over time.

Everyday wear

  • Don't iron or dry clean.
  • Avoid rough surfaces. Benches, velcro, rough walls and gym equipment can cause pilling. Keep velcro fastenings away from your leggings in the wash too.
  • Rotate your pairs. Giving leggings a rest between wears helps the fabric recover. A leggings bundle makes that easy.

FAQs

How often should I wash my leggings?

Wash them after sweaty sessions. For light wear, you can air them out and wear them again before washing.

Why shouldn't I use fabric softener on activewear?

Softener coats the fibres, which stops the fabric wicking sweat properly and can affect its stretch and recovery.

How do I stop my leggings pilling?

Wash them inside out, keep them away from velcro and rough fabrics, and avoid rubbing against rough surfaces like benches and walls.
